About me

My name is Gary Byrne and I am a Person-Centred Counsellor, I provide a discreet and confidential counselling service in Carlisle Cumbria. I have a Diploma in Counselling and I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).

I have worked as an addictions counsellor for approximately ten years supporting people to address addictive patterns and behaviours. My experience is wide ranging from managing medically assisted drug and alcohol detoxifications to offering specialist Recovery Coaching techniques to support people to break free from dependence.

In the past three years I have diversified my approach to work outside of addiction support and have worked with adult clients of all age groups with differing presenting issues.

Due to my own ongoing professional development and personal therapy I find myself in a place where I feel connected to life and those around me, on reflection I can now see how important it was to have someone to connect with and talk to, someone who did not judge my thoughts and feelings and accepted me for the person I was.

Do you feel trapped and cannot see a way out of your current situation?

I offer a safe, supportive and confidential space to help you explore the issues that you feel are troubling you the most.

If you feel that you have lost your way in life and can’t seem to make sense of intrusive thoughts and feelings then Person-Centred Counselling may support you to sensitively explore those thoughts and feelings without any pressure or judgement.

FAQs

What type of counselling is on offer?
I offer Person-Centred Therapy or Person Centred Counselling as it is also known which was pioneered by Carl Rogers. It is a psychotherapeutic style of counselling that is non-directive and focuses on psychological conditions and open communication thus empowering you to achieve your full potential. The therapy is directed by you, it happens at your pace and we work together respectfully with the issues you feel are relevant.
Do counsellors give advice?

As a counsellor I will not be giving direct advice as Person-Centred counselling is a non-directive client led therapy. This style of counselling works on the therapeutic principal that given the right therapeutic conditions you will find the answers that are right for you and your well-being.  More I will be supporting you to build trust in your own thoughts and feelings thus empowering you to make the right choices for you and creating your own solutions to your own problems.

If after your initial session you decide to book another session we will meet at a time that suits us both at my counselling practice located at Cumbria Therapies in Carlisle. The location is discreet with lots of free parking and also within walking distance of Carlisle’s main bus routes.
How do I pay for my counselling sessions?
Payment to be made in cash at the end of each session. Receipts will be provided at point of payment.
Where will we meet?
My practice is based at Cumbria Therapies in Carlisle – 24 Norfolk Rd, Carlisle CA2 5PQ. If this location is not suitable for whatever reason then I am happy to explore possible alternative venues in your locality.
Fees

Counselling sessions are typically 50 minutes long and the fee is £45 per session, although I do offer a reduced rate of £30 for an initial session.

I also offer a reduced rate of £30 per session for students studying Person Centred Counselling who may need personal therapy to support their own continued professional development (CPD).

What if I need to cancel a session?
If you cannot make your pre-booked session for any reason then I will need 48 hours notice and I will happily reschedule your appointment for another time. If the notice of the cancellation is less than 48 hours then the session fee will still need to be charged in full.
How many sessions will I need?
The amount of sessions will be entirely decided by yourself whether that be short or long term. We can stop the counselling at any time no questions asked. Usually a person will need 3-4 sessions but if you feel you need more time then I’m happy to work with you and your needs at your pace. If our work is long term then I will introduce a review session to explore if we are still focused on your goals and to ensure the relationship is therapeutically beneficial.
